Tun_(unit)


The tun is an old English unit of wine cask volume, holding about 1 E-1 m?|954 litres, almost a cubic metre. Etymologically it is identical to the ton. Originally, it was a genuine unit of volume and measured 256 gallons, which is the base for the name of the quarter of 64 corn gallons. Its later division into 210 imperial or 252 wine gallons was chosen to be evenly divisible by small integers, including seven:
; 210 := 2 ? 3 ? 5 ? 7
; 252 := 2? ? 3? ? 7
Anne of Great Britain|Queen Anne’s wine gallon is 231 cubic inches (3 × 7 × 11 in?), which makes the tun based on it exactly 2? ? 3? ? 7? ? 11 = 58,212 in?, which is a cylinder with diameter and height of 42 in both.It is assumed that the tun once also was the base for English brewery casks, whose now largest measure, the hogshead, is of a similar magnitude as its wine equinominent (between 220 and 250 litres). A different gallon was used for ale and beer, the ale gallon, which in modern times was 282 cubic inches (2 ? 3 ? 47 in?), which does not divide the 58,212 in? nicely.

Biotin, also known as vitamin H or B7 and C10H16N2O3S (Biotin; Coenzyme R, Biopeiderm), is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin which is composed of an ureido ring fused with a tetrahydrothiophene ring. A valeric acid substituent is attached to one of the carbon atoms of the tetrahydrothiophene ring. Biotin is important in the catalysis of essential metabolic reactions to synthesize fatty acids, in gluconeogenesis, and to metabolize leucine. It is commonly found in pyruvate dehydrogenase as a carrier of HCO3-.

Tungiasis


Tungiasis is a skin infestation of the ''chigoe flea|Tunga penetrans'' flea (also known as chigoe flea, jigger, nigua or sand flea), found in the tropical parts of Africa, Caribbean, Central and South America, and India. This disease is endemic in Nigeria and Trinidad and Tobago where in the 1980s the prevalance of tungiasis among children approached 40%. It is rarely found outside these areas.The parasite|parasitic flea lives in soil and sand, and feeds intermittently on warm-blooded hosts such as humans, cattle, sheep, dogs, mice, and other animals. In order to reproduce, the female flea burrows head-first into the hosts' skin, often leaving the caudal tip of its abdomen visible through an orifice in a skin lesion. This orifice allows the chigoe flea to breathe while feeding on blood vessels in the cutaneous and subcutaneous dermal layer. In the next two weeks, the flea releases about 100 eggs through the orifice, which fall to the ground. The flea then dies and is sl! oughed by the host's skin. Within the next three to four days, the eggs hatch and mature into adult fleas within three to four weeks.

Mastoiditis is an infection of the mastoid process, the portion of the temporal bone of the skull that is behind the ear. It is usually caused by untreated acute otitis media (middle ear infection) and used to be a leading cause of child mortality. With the development of antibiotics, however, mastoiditis has become quite rare in developed countries, most likely due to antibiotic treatment of otitis media before it can spread. It is treated with medications and/or surgery. If untreated, the infection can spread to surrounding structures, including the brain, causing serious complications.

The Wine Group, known for its Franzia "wine in a box", is the third largest wine company in the world, behind Constellation Brands and the E & J Gallo Winery. The company was first founded in 1981 with a management buyout of the wine assets of the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of New York.
